The International Bar Association welcomes the first woman President in 20 years

Spanish Lawyer Almudena Arpon de Mendivil Aldama has assumed the presidency of the International Bar Association becoming the first woman in the last 20 years to hold the role. Almudena Arpon has succeeded Zimbabwe’s Sternford Moyo and will serve as the president from 2023-24. Almudena Arpon is the only and the second woman in the IBA’s 76-year history to be named as the president. Almudena Arpon is a corporate/M&A partner at Gomez-Acebo & Pombo in Madrid to lead the firm’s TMT Group.

The annual conferences in Miami last year emphasised the Association’s active support for rule of law for particularly Ukrainian Lawyers. Commercial Law Firm partners are well represented in Almudena Arpon’s leadership cohot, that includes Jaime Carey, managing partner at the Chilean Law Firm Carey, and Claudio Visco, managing partner at the Italian Law Firm Macchi di Cellere Gangemi.
